MEMPHIS CANDY
Alice Cicolini’s signature Memphis collection is entirely made in the UK, in the studio of one of Hatton Garden’s last pattern makers trained to create original models by hand. Bringing a maker’s sensibility to production, the pieces are cast in 14ct gold, then set and hand lacquered in London by this city’s finest enamel mastercraftsman. The Memphis Candy Band and Memphis Round & Square Stone Rings are original design by Alice Cicolini launched in 2012.
The collection has grown considerably since then and has inspired, along with the work of two other major colour enthusiasts Taffin and Solange Azagury, a major movement in the recognition of enamel’s potential within the world of fine jewellery.
Candy Pave and Candy Lacquer were both added to the collection in 2016. Taking inspiration from the lacquer techniques of Burma, China and Japan, Candy Lacquer incorporates large strokes of colour, focusing on the black, red and orange tones that are most celebrated in these techniques, before building out in to her classic palettes of neons, graphic black & whites, and softer pastels. Candy Pave replaces the gold in Alice’s classic Memphis Single Stripe with a pave of diamonds or tone-on-tone colorful sapphires, creating a contemporary refresh to the concept of the eternity band. Candy Pave stone rings make a colourful alternative bridal option and can be made to measure.
Inspired by Ettore Sottsass’s famous design movement, the collection enables the wearer to create totemic stacks of colour. The cold lacquer brings strength and durability as well as offering an unlimited palette, and the pieces can be worn together or next to client’s existing jewels to add flashes of vibrant colour.
Made to the highest level of production quality here in the UK, the Memphis collection pieces are created to last. With the correct levels of care these durable enamel pieces should wear in the same way as gold jewellery, with the added advantage that many of the styles in this collection can have the colours changed should client’s wish to have a refreshing. The Memphis collection can be made to measure for engagement rings and wedding bands, where clients can choose stones and colours to order, and Alice is regularly commissioned to recreate client’s heirloom pieces into new bespoke jewellery in this style.
